Surrender. What Does it Mean?

Updated: Apr 15

To surrender in Christ means to relinquish control in my thoughts, actions, words, letting go of my terms and willingly saying my life and all it encompasses belongs to God. Having an understanding in which I share every area of my life with Him because it actually belongs to God. My finances, my children, my career, my relationships, and even my time. Yes, even time.

Realizing this helped me significantly with my prayer life. I've always understood finances, children, career, relationships, etc..., but never time. I was holding onto time as if it were mine. So, I had to relinquish control over my time and surrender it to God, because time belongs to him.

When God wakes me to pray at two in the morning, at times, I would complain because naturally, I was sleepy. I did not want to get out of my bed. However, now (thank you Jesus) I understand  it's not my time to control. I surrendered my terms of time because it belongs to God. Even when I'm exhausted at 2am sometimes 3am, I say okay Jesus, it's your time. Then I go to my designated spot to pray. Guess what? Christ meets me there every single time!

Surrendering in Christ meant I needed to be completely honest about my life. By praying for God's will to be done on earth as it is in heaven, I invite God to my life in every area for total surrender.

Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.

In order for the God's Kingdom to come, the act of surrendering has to take place Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven. We pray this but what is actually taking place in heaven? In heaven there is complete surrender to God. The angels are yielded to God as they serve him, as they carry out his will which glorifies Him. So, if we are praying for the Lord's Kingdom to come on earth as it is in heaven, we need to mimic what is happening in heaven, which is total surrender to God.. When we do that here on earth, then God's will is being accomplished - which brings forth God's Kingdom! We invite the Lord to bring his kingdom power into every part of our lives as we present them to him.

Matthew 6:33 - seeking the Kingdom of God. What is his Kingdom? It's His righteousness, his joy, and peace, the fulfillment of His will on earth. My life on earth is to mimic what is taking place in heaven.

Prayer:

Father, I pray your heart for me. I want you more than the answer, I want you more than the need to be right. I want you more than that relationship, job, I just want you. As I surrender, I acknowledge you in every area of my life and God, I trust and rely on you completely. Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not unto my understanding. Father you said that if I seek your kingdom first and your righteousness, then all these things will be added unto me. God, I seek your Kingdom and in your kingdom is total surrender. I surrender my will, my time, my finances, my children, my career, education to you. Father, as I surrender, help me to wait patiently on you. Your word says, they that wait upon the Lord, you will renew their strength. Thank you for renewing my strength. As I wait, Lord help me to be content in you regardless of my circumstances in the wait. Lord, I pray that (Phil 4:11)  I learn to be content, self sufficient,  through Christ, satisfied to the point where I am not distracted or uneasy regardless of my circumstances.  Lord, I pray your heart for me. In Jesus name,  Amen.
